THE LITTLE GIRL BEANS
Before this little girl went on her field trip she didn’t realize what poor really was.
As a little girl she didn’t feel what poor was.
As a little girl she couldn’t see what poor was.
As a little girl she couldn’t smell what poor was.
Once upon a time there was a little girl who a field trip with her 1st grade class to Brookfield Zoo in Chicago IL. She asked her mom to pack her a sack lunch to take with her. They had a hot plate at the time for cooking and had to go through drastic measures just to flush the toilet, but as a little girl, she didn't know she was poor. So her mom pulled out this container and put this clump of beans in it. She just looked at her and did not think anything of it. Well hey, as a little girl she just figured this was the way of life. So her mom took the container and then placed it in a crumbled up paper bag. Her mommy looked at her and smiled and all she could see was love in her mother’s eyes and that was enough for the little girl. So off to school she went.
When it came time for the little girl’s class to sit down and have lunch, she could see all of the other children around her pulling out cool lunch boxes, and sandwiches with good snacks, like Twinkies, and cupcakes. So all of a sudden this little girl could feel this nervousness overcome her thinking about if she could pull out her container of beans, the sight of the beans, the smell of the beans, and then eating the beans in front of all of her class mates. She felt like all of the kids are going to laugh at her. So she sat there and pretended as though she was not hungry. So as time went on and the little girl sat there the teacher could see that something was wrong. She asked the little girl why she was not eating her lunch and the little girl stated that she was not hungry. So the teacher must have sensed something was wrong by the way this little girl looked, so she politely walked over to her and asked if she could see what she had for lunch. The little girl was so ashamed and when the teacher looked into the little girl’s bag she could see the container of beans. The little girl was so embarrassed that the teacher had seen what she had for lunch, but her teacher said very softly to her “ I love Beans and would you like to trade lunch?” at that moment the little girls spirit lifted and that teacher made her feel so good. The little girl for that moment felt like all of the other kids eating their lunch at the table and nothing else mattered.
This little girl now:
Knows how it felt to be poor,
Knows what poor looked like,
And could also taste what being poor was like.
The moral of this story is you never know what a person’s journey or struggle is, and how they got there until you hear their story. Sometimes growing up we can get trapped if we never see outside of the box as we become consumed by our environment. I have worked hard to become the woman I am today and nothing or no one is going to stop me from continuing to thrive to become a better person. I certainly am NOT where I want to be in life, but I’m SURE not where I use to be. That little girl in that story was me and out of everything that I have endured in my life that was a huge eye opener for me. I never want my children to be that little girl named LaFrance who had nothing but beans to take for lunch on a field trip.
God place everyone here for a purpose, have you discovered what your purpose is? Let me guide you down the right path.--Lafrance
